Description

Optical Windows from X-Z LAB are flat, plane-parallel plates that shield electronic sensors and detectors from harsh outside environments. A window sits directly in the beam path. Its material and surface quality shape system performance as much as any lens in the train.

Optical Windows in a wide range of substrates

Choose the substrate by transmission band first, then weigh mechanical and thermal demands. X-Z LAB supplies BK7 and UVFS for ultraviolet through near-infrared work. For harsher duty, sapphire and YAG-family crystals (YAG, GGG, GSGG) bring hardness and thermal stability. Calcite covers polarization-sensitive builds, while CaF2, MgF2, and BaF2 serve deep-UV and infrared bands. Germanium and silicon cover the mid- and long-wave infrared, and color filter glass serves budget-friendly visible applications.

Window geometries and coatings

Plano windows suit straight-through protection. Wedged windows, in contrast, avoid ghost reflections from parallel surfaces. Brewster’s angle windows pass p-polarized light with almost no reflection loss. Many windows are available with coating options for the UV, visible, or IR spectrum. You can tune throughput and durability to the job.

Selecting the right window

Start from the transmission curve: the substrate must pass your signal band with margin on both sides. Then check mechanical strength and thermal expansion against mounts, seals, and temperature swings. Match the coating to the spectrum you actually use. A window coated for the visible band will not help an infrared camera, and vice versa.

Where Optical Windows go to work

Laser builders mount them on YAG(Nd) and YVO4(Nd) systems, diode lasers, fiber lasers, excimer lasers, He-Ne lasers, and gas lasers. Infrared teams use germanium and silicon windows for remote sensing, thermal imaging, surveillance and security, and medical thermography. Industrial and OEM programs use them where sensors need protection.
