Description
LiF Infrared Crystal is a cubic crystal cleavable along 100 and less commonly 110. It offers high optical transmittance from the vacuum ultraviolet to the infrared (0.11 to 7 µm). Transmittance in the VUV is excellent. From 110 nm to 7 µm in one window. The compound is lithium fluoride.
LiF Infrared Crystal handling notes
Modest precautions apply against moisture and high-energy radiation damage. LiF is affected by atmospheric moisture at 400 °C and softens at 600 °C. It is sensitive to thermal shock, and irradiation produces color centers. Handle gently and shield from radiation. Avoid rapid temperature swings. The 600 °C softening point sets the thermal ceiling. Moisture matters mainly at high temperature. Normal lab handling suffices. Store away from strong radiation sources.
LiF Infrared Crystal advantages
Broad 0.11-7 µm transmittance. Excellent VUV response. Cubic structure with clean cleavage. Cleavage along 100 simplifies fabrication. One crystal covers UV sources to IR detectors. The broad band simplifies inventory. VUV performance justifies the care.
Typical applications
Windows. Lenses. Polarizers. Prisms. UV-sources. Receivers. Excimer lasers. X-ray fluorescence instruments. VUV spectrometers rely on LiF windows. Excimer lasers need VUV-grade windows. XRF instruments use it for clean spectra. Match the window to your source. One material for sources and detectors. Polarizers exploit the cubic symmetry.
