Description
KTA Non-Linear Crystal is an excellent nonlinear optical crystal for OPO applications. OPO devices based on KTA are reliable solid-state sources of tunable laser radiation, with high energy conversion efficiency. In addition, KTA offers a very high damage threshold and lower absorption than KTP in the 3-4 um range.
KTA Non-Linear Crystal for tunable sources
An optical parametric oscillator turns one pump wavelength into two tunable outputs. KTA was developed mainly for this job. High conversion efficiency means most of the pump energy becomes useful tunable light. That efficiency, paired with high damage resistance, makes KTA OPOs workhorses. For example, a single pump laser can then serve spectroscopy across a wide band.
The 3-4 um advantage
In the 3-4 um spectrum range, KTA absorbs less than KTP. Lower absorption means less heat and more stable operation in the mid-infrared. Consequently, systems targeting this band choose KTA over KTP. Mid-infrared output serves spectroscopy, sensing, and countermeasure applications.
KTA Non-Linear Crystal advantages
Large nonlinear optical and electro-optical coefficients drive efficient conversion. Wide angular bandwidth and small walk-off angle ease alignment. Broad temperature and spectral bandwidth add tolerance. Low dielectric constant, loss tangent, and ionic conductivities keep the electrical behavior clean. High damage threshold and strong resistance to high-intensity laser radiation complete the picture. Moreover, the low dielectric constant simplifies high-voltage E-O driving.
Typical applications
Optical parametric oscillation is the headline use. Sum and difference frequency generation extend the wavelength reach. Electro-optical Q-switching and modulation use the E-O side. For the classic doubling crystal, see our KTP Non-Linear Crystal.
