Description

YLF(Nd) is the workhorse lasing medium for diode-pumped and arc lamp-pumped solid-state lasers. This neodymium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride crystal suits systems that need strong pulses at repetition rates of a few kilohertz, outperforming YAG(Nd) on pulse energy in that regime.

Why laser builders choose YLF(Nd)

The crystal is naturally birefringent, so it emits cleanly polarized beams at 1047 nm and 1053 nm without extra intracavity elements.

The two emission lines at 1047 nm and 1053 nm correspond to different polarization states in the birefringent host. Designers pick the 1047 nm line for maximum gain or the 1053 nm line when the resonator layout favors it. Both sit close to the 1064 nm line of Nd:YAG, so much of the same pump and optics know-how transfers directly.

Diode pumping keeps heat load low and wall-plug efficiency high, which suits compact industrial and scientific systems. Arc lamp pumping still serves high-average-power builds where the infrastructure already exists. The low thermal conductivity of the crystal shapes how you design the cooling path — plan for gentle gradients rather than aggressive chilling.

Handle YLF(Nd) with care

This material is very brittle and fractures easily, so mounts should spread mechanical load and avoid point stress. It is also slightly soluble in water, which means you should keep finished parts dry and handle them with clean, dry gloves.

Typical applications

Ultrashort pulse lasers and mode-locked lasers use this gain medium to reach high peak powers, and power amplifiers pair it with diode or arc-lamp pump modules.
