Er Glass Laser Crystal from X-Z LAB is erbium and ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass built for 1535 nm lasers. The 1535 nm wavelength is eye-safe and transmits well through the atmosphere. Consequently, this glass serves rangefinders, free-space links, and medical systems.

Er Glass Laser Crystal: four grades

X-Z LAB produces four kinds of erbium-doped glass for different uses. WM4 is erbium phosphate glass for ion-exchange purposes. Cr14 is erbium phosphate glass for xenon lamp-pumping laser devices and laser range-finders. EAT14 is Yb3+ and Er3+ co-doped phosphate glass for high repetition rates: it runs 1-6 Hz in laser diode-pumped 1535 nm lasers, and high Yb3+ doping can be realized in this glass. CrE5 targets large energy output: after surface strengthening treatment, the rod works safely at 1 Hz repetition at over 10 J output.

Why 1535 nm is eye-safe

Light at 1535 nm is absorbed by the eye’s front structures before it reaches the retina. Therefore, systems can operate at higher powers while staying eye-safe. In addition, the wavelength passes through the atmosphere with high transmission. Moreover, atmospheric transmission at 1535 nm beats most nearby bands, which extends the useful range.

Medical use without the goggles problem

The glass suits medical purposes where eye protection is difficult to manage. In some procedures, goggles diminish or hinder essential visual observation. An eye-safe wavelength removes that conflict: the team sees clearly while the laser works. Similarly, industrial alignment tasks benefit when operators keep full vision.
