A recent study found that radiation exposure can contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers used low-dose-rate ionizing radiation treatments on mice and discovered that the hippocampus, which is responsible for learning and memory formation, has been changed. The hippocampus is known to be negatively affected in Alzheimer’s patients. During the study, the mice were exposed to a more than 1,000 times smaller cumulative dose than the dose from a CT scan.
