Co2+MgAlO4 | Q-Switch Crystal is a relatively new material for passive Q-switching in lasers emitting from 1.2 to 1.6um, in particular. For eye-safe 1.54um Glass(Er) laser, Co2+MgAlO4 also works at 1.44um and 1.34um wavelengths. The high-absorption cross section of 3.5 x 10-19cm2 permits Q-switching of Glass(Er) lasers without intracavitary, focusing both with flash-lamp and diode-laser pumping. Negligible excited-state absorption results in high contrast of the Q-switch, i.e., the ratio of initial and saturated absorption signals is higher than 10. The crystal’s excellent optical, mechanical, and thermal properties give an opportunity to design compact and reliable laser sources with this passive Q-switch.
